Parke County commissioners voted to authorize the superintendent to pursue plans to remove invasive water-lily growth from a shallow, aging county lake and to seek the necessary quotes and permits to advance mechanical harvesting, chemical treatment and possible dredging.
During discussion commissioners and staff described the lake as unusually shallow and silted, with rapid plant regrowth after drought. A participant who spoke about contractor estimates cited a dredging option of about $37,900 and said mechanical harvesting and chemical follow-up were part of the proposed approach. Meeting discussion noted that chemical licensing and timing make late-summer treatment more likely and that additional appropriation would probably be required to complete the work.
Chair (S1) moved that the superintendent be authorized to proceed with plans for eradication and removal; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners instructed the superintendent to return with detailed quotes, permit information and a formal appropriation request before work begins.
The board’s action authorizes staff to continue planning and to bring a financial request back for formal approval; no final contract award or appropriation for dredging was recorded at the meeting.
