The county’s veterans services representative reported 21 new clients since January, including 15 new benefit claims and five pending appeals. He described one homeless veteran who was admitted to Union Hospital and, through coordination with VA Outreach, was placed in lodging and expedited into housing within three weeks rather than months.
The veterans representative said the county operates three vehicles for trips and is preparing for the possible loss of a large van provided by the DAV because of mileage. He said replacing that vehicle could require about $5,000 in local funds and that neighboring counties may be asked to contribute proportionally.
An agency official who oversees EMS provided a separate update: lit tax and billing changes increased revenue, with the EMS service reporting over $1,000,000 in revenue in 2025. The official described ongoing contract arrangements with neighboring counties, ownership of ambulances and a plan to order a third ambulance this year to achieve operational independence for response and facilities.
Commissioners thanked the veterans representative and EMS staff and suggested pursuing legislative or senator-level outreach where appropriate; no formal board action was taken on benefits or ambulance funding during the meeting.
