BPW pauses meter shutoffs as crews complete lift‑station repairs; irrigation pivot collapsed

The Malden Board of Public Works postponed meter shutoffs for nonpayment because of extreme heat and received updates on maintenance and equipment damage at its July 29 meeting.
Board Secretary Cathy Merritt told the board that meter pulling for nonpayment would be suspended until Aug. 4, 2025, owing to high temperatures. Electric Distribution Coordinator Todd Jenkins reported routine maintenance by crews and said the Mayberry–Stokes project awaits delivery of one remaining part. Power Plant Superintendent Drew Miller said the plant is conducting summer preventive routines and will run summer capability tests in the coming weeks.
Utility Director Ivone Smith said Water/Wastewater Supervisor Mr. Krepps submitted a report noting clean water samples and that lift-station repairs are progressing: Highway J lift station is repaired and operational, 62 & 25 lift station work should finish soon, and Francis lift station remains the last to complete.
Smith also reported that an irrigation pivot had collapsed and was broken in half; she said MIRMA (the city’s insurer) has been notified, that the damage will be added to an existing claim, and that Jones Irrigation has been contacted about repairs.
