The Malden Board of Public Works voted July 29 to approve reduced arrears payments for Dunklin County Sewer District #1 and recommended the City Council approve an amended repayment agreement.
Utility Director Ivone Smith told the board the Dunklin County Sewer District board requested a lower arrears payment so it could resume payments on its USDA loans. Smith said the district had been required to make arrears payments of $2,344.35 but had paid $980.29 in the two most recent months; Smith also said the district is continuing to pay a monthly flow charge of $3,646.72.
City Attorney Jonce Chidister was directed to draft an amendment reducing the required arrears payment to $980.29 with recommended stipulations. Board Member Woods moved to approve the reduced payments and forward the amendment to City Council; Board Member Loughary seconded and the motion passed (tally not specified in the minutes).
The board’s action was a recommendation to City Council; the city council will have the final authority to accept and adopt any amendment to the repayment contract.
Clarifying details: the minutes list three figures in Smith’s report — $2,344.35 (arrears payment originally required), $980.29 (payments actually received in recent months), and $3,646.72 (monthly flow charge) — and state the board voted to reduce the arrears-payment requirement to the $980.29 level subject to attorney-drafted stipulations.
Next steps: the recommended amendment will be presented for City Council consideration; the board minutes do not record the council’s decision or any effective dates for the amended schedule.
