Ken‑Caryl staff confirm emerald ash borer detections; outline targeted injections and removals

Ken‑Caryl Ranch parks staff told the board the emerald ash borer (EAB) has been detected on district property and in nearby areas, and staff outlined a mix of removals and insecticide injections as the district's response.
"We found 15 trees total. We've removed and disposed of 12 and the other three are set to come out this week," Parks Director Richard reported. He said detections were concentrated in the Valley Parkway/Club Drive area and staff will continue canopy monitoring and flagging for symptomatic trees.
Board members asked about injection effectiveness. DG, participating on the call, said treatments "are upwards of 80%–90% effective" when trees are caught early, and noted the district uses a two‑year injection cycle. He added smaller or heavily infected trees may still experience significant dieback and are not good candidates for injection.
Richard said the district began injecting Plains trees in 2026 and will inject valley trees in 2027, alternating in subsequent years to prioritize resources. Removed trees are chipped and disposed in landfill to prevent spread; staff said they do not currently have access to a tub grinder.
Staff also said they are working with the Colorado State Forest Service and the Master Association communications team to prepare outreach and educational materials for residents about signs, treatment decisions and available resources.
The board did not take formal action on treatments during the meeting but asked staff to continue monitoring, prioritize high‑value and early‑infection trees for injection, and return with implementation details and outreach plans.
