St. Joseph board refines committee roles, keeps academic and finance panels and adds guidance group

The St. Joseph School Board agreed during a training session to continue its academic and finance committees while refining each group’s purpose, membership and reporting expectations.

Robert Station, who led the academic update, said the academic committee focused this year on assessment design, progress monitoring and stakeholder feedback and recommended starting committee work in September after state data are clearer. "I love using data to guide and inform and decision-making," Station said.

Board members decided the academic committee will meet monthly beginning in September, skip December and aim to wrap substantive recommendations by April. The finance committee will meet quarterly in September, November, February and April; one member objected to a quarterly cadence, saying the district’s tight reserve position requires closer attention.

Members emphasized that committees should be advisory, have a clear purpose statement, and return concise reports (a paragraph or one-page summary) to the full board so trustees know what committees spent their time on and whether recommendations warrant board action. The board asked members to submit proposed committee priorities and purpose statements to the chair by July 23 for compilation.

The board also agreed to create a district guidance committee (to address recurring "hot topics" such as consolidation) and to retain an ad hoc policy committee to process MSBA policy updates as needed. Staff said committees will remain advisory and will not direct daily staff operations; final decisions rest with the full board.
