Ray Hultay, Highway Superintendent, told the Blandford Select Board on April 6 that highway crew members had asked the town to pay 100% of the cost of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) classes and to pay employees for time spent attending classes.
The board reviewed the requests during its departmental review of the Highway Department. The existing personnel policy currently requires the town to pay two‑thirds of a CDL class cost while the employee pays one‑third; the Select Board decided to keep the policy as written. The board likewise declined to change payroll practice to pay employees’ regular salary for class time, noting that CDL classes are available at night.
Hultay also raised a separate payroll‑records concern, saying he could not see vacation balances or his hourly rate on his pay stub. Chair J. Coury said he would speak with the payroll department to clarify Hultay’s records. The board met with Hultay as part of a first‑year performance review; further discussion of personnel‑policy feedback was tabled for a later date.
The exchange was procedural and resulted in no changes to policy at the April 6 meeting. The board did not take a separate vote to alter the CDL or pay‑time rules.
