Middlebury Public Works lists facility repairs and scheduled inspections for town buildings

Assistant Director Peter Vaccarelli gave commissioners a facilities update at the March 16 meeting, covering work at the Middlebury Police Department Headquarters, Town Hall, Shepardson Community Center, the Historical Building and other town properties.
Vaccarelli said proposed basement lighting at MPDH is on hold at Chief Deely’s request and that the chief confirmed no heating issues at the police facility. At Town Hall, he said the new alarm system installation has been stalled by weather; remaining exterior camera work is anticipated to finish by the end of April. Winter slate roof inspections for Town Hall and Shepardson Community Center were scheduled for March 20.
At the Historical Building, DPW completed a repair to the original 1998 furnace and has submitted a request for a full furnace replacement; permanent cupola repair is planned for April. Vaccarelli also reported a leaking condensate pump at the Shepardson Community Center for which a replacement has been ordered.
Vaccarelli said Attorney Broderick’s office on the library’s bottom floor experienced water penetration under a rear door into kitchen and bathroom areas; DPW corrected the issue and reported no damage. At Fire Department Headquarters, new wet and dry sprinkler systems were completed in key apparatus rooms and Phase II of the installation was approved to begin the next day.
Vaccarelli noted the dog pound received a sample floor grate and that DPW ordered the remaining grates required to comply with State requirements. Vehicle Maintenance, Highway Garage, Transfer Station and several parks and recreation areas were reported as having no issues; pothole patrols will continue as temperatures warm.
The meeting closed after routine agenda items and adjournment was moved by Dan Bartholomew, seconded by Mark A. Capodanno and approved. The next regular Public Works Commission meeting is set for April 20, 2026.
