Facilities outlines summer painting, HVAC, flooring and security upgrades

Kevin McCarthy, facility operations director for the Stamford School District, told the Operations Committee that facilities staff will focus this summer on building-level maintenance and operational projects intended to prepare schools for fall.
McCarthy said crews will finish Turner River and then move full painting teams to Cloonan to paint interior common spaces, classrooms and hallways. He said the district is installing luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring at recent replacements (Newfield, Northeast) because LVT does not require stripping and waxing and reduces labor and material costs over VCT.
He listed other planned work: a restroom-accessibility renovation at Springdale tied to masonry and window replacement, sprinkler maintenance and repairs, replacement of eight rooftop units at Still Meadow, expansion of HVAC controls and VAV work at Davenport, and ongoing roof-replacement projects awaiting state bid authorization. Custodial crews will perform summer deep-cleaning, and playground repairs will continue through the end of July.
On security, McCarthy said the district is standardizing front-desk security stations, adding cameras at the middle schools and continuing installation of duress buttons.
Why it matters: These operational projects affect building readiness for students and staff, influence the school-year opening condition and can reduce recurring maintenance costs through product choices (LVT) and equipment upgrades.
