New Ashford Select Board approves $8,000 tree work, readies culvert repairs and schedules tax-classification hearing

The New Ashford Select Board on Aug. 18 approved tree-removal work estimated at about $8,000 to address trees hanging over Mallery Road and discussed multiple upcoming road projects and repairs. Mark Phelps moved to approve the tree work, and Jason Jayko seconded; the motion passed unanimously among members present.
Keith Lacasse, the town Road Commissioner, told the board he had mowed the south-end roads through Mallery Road and marked approximately eight trees for removal where limbs hang over the roadway. He said crews will close the road while they cut the trees and will use a boom lift to trim canopy on the west side of Mallery Road. Lacasse estimated the work at $8,000 and said funds would come from the roads and bridges budget.
Lacasse also reported that a galvanized culvert on Greylock Road needs to be lowered and replaced before planned paving can begin. The board discussed a dead ash tree that fell during roadside mowing on Smith Road and pushed a culvert down; Lacasse said the culvert may be salvageable but riprap could be required to stabilize the area.
The board addressed a separate homeowner notification that a resident may be spending the winter in a camper on Ingraham Road; because there is no residence beyond the current plow limit, the board determined the town need not extend plowing farther up Ingraham Road. Members noted that the Route 7 bridge work is expected to finish next week and that contractor equipment should be removed within about two weeks, which could affect scheduling for local road work.
The board said Keith Lacasse had submitted an estimate for an addition to the Fire Station; quotes on that project will be discussed at the Aug. 25 meeting. The Select Board also discussed rerouting the end of Roys Road to connect to Greylock Road with guardrails and agreed to consult the state on feasibility.
The board scheduled a Tax Classification hearing for Aug. 25, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., with a Select Board meeting to follow to review the tax rate and paving bids.
