New Ashford explores one-year trial allowing residents to use Williamstown transfer station with permit

MLP Manager Ken McInerney briefed the board on discussions with Williamstown DPW Director Craig Clough and the Northern Berkshire Solid Waste District about a one-year trial that would allow New Ashford residents to use Williamstown's transfer station. Under the proposed arrangement, residents would purchase an annual permit for $120 and pay per-bag disposal fees when using the facility.
The board recorded initial per-bag fee figures discussed during the meeting as $5 per bag up to 15 gallons and $10 for larger bags, but meeting notes indicate a post-meeting confirmation that the under-15-gallon bag fee would be $2 and bags over 15 gallons would be $10. Residents would also have access to Williamstown's glass, plastic and metal recycling containers and the large metal recycling container. The Select Board plans to email a survey to town residents to gauge interest in participating in a one-year trial.
Board members also noted recycling issues at New Ashford's transfer station, including cardboard not being flattened and a bag of unwashed recyclables placed in the glass bin, which factored into discussions about access to Williamstown's facilities.
