Student council recommends bathroom-pass changes; school committee plans handbook review

Student representatives Maria and Ryan told the Nashoba Regional School Committee on March 25 that Student Council recommended changes to the district bathroom-pass policy and provided design feedback for bathrooms at the new school, and the committee discussed how to route that student work into the official student handbook process.
"StuCo gave them a recommendation for the new bathroom pass policy," Maria said during the student representative report. Ryan added that the student leaders and the student advisory council offered input on a bathroom design for the new school and that Student Council wants clearer information about how policies are made and how the committee and students can work together.
Communications subcommittee members explained the planned process: Student Council will identify handbook sections that students think need revision, develop proposals (the bathroom policy being one example), and forward recommendations through Principal Boynton so the committee can consider them at the May handbook vote. Amy Cohen, who chairs the communications subcommittee, said the committee plans to formalize a charge for students at the August workshop and check in midyear.
Committee members asked practical questions about how and when the student feedback will be shared. The district emphasized that the student handbook approval is a School Committee responsibility and that the planned schedule aims to incorporate student proposals into the committee’s May vote on handbooks.
What’s next: staff and the communications subcommittee will work with Student Council and Principal Boynton to ensure proposed handbook language is transmitted in time for the committee’s May handbook approval vote.
