Bourne School Committee funds district Director of Technology position

Bourne — The Bourne School Committee voted 7–0 on June 2 to fund a Director of Technology position intended to consolidate management of the district’s network, devices and instructional systems.
The motion to fund the position was made by Paul McMaster and seconded by Erin Perry; the roll-call vote was recorded 7–0–0. Superintendent Dr. Kerri Anne Quinlan‑Zhou told the committee the director would “overlook every aspect of educational technology, devices and infrastructure,” and would be both “teacher facing, student facing” and work at the administrative level.
Committee members described the role as a missing link between existing staff. Dr. Zhou said current responsibilities are split across a network manager (referred to in the meeting as Nik), an information‑services staff member handling PowerSchool, and others who manage device inventory and purchases; the new director would oversee and coordinate that work.
During the budget discussion Dr. Ryan Place said the district received an additional $68,000 in state reimbursement under the special‑education “circuit breaker” process after exceeding the 25% threshold for eligible expenses. Director of Business Services Jordan Geist told the committee the district remains carrying roughly $400,000 in salaries for pandemic‑period positions and is pursuing ESSER funds to address those costs.
Committee Chair Emily Berry and administrators said the position could be funded this year but cautioned that long‑term funding would require future commitment. Jordan Geist will present recommended line‑item transfers to the committee at the June 16 meeting, the board was told.
The committee did not adopt a job description at the June 2 meeting; policy and job details were referred to the Policy Subcommittee and administration for follow up.
