Northfield Finance Committee approves $11,000 Reserve Fund transfer to replace library rear door

Dickinson Memorial Library Director Misha Storm asked the Finance Committee on Feb. 2 for an $11,000 Reserve Fund transfer to replace a deteriorating 42"x84" wooden rear basement door that provides access to the library’s food pantry.
Storm told the committee the door dates to 1897, is custom-sized and historically significant, and has rapidly deteriorated since it began regular use by the pantry. She said it is leaking at the transom and allows drafts into the furnace area. "It is an enormous, wooden door—42\" width x 84\" height—from 1897 and it is dramatically falling apart," she said.
Committee member Bernhard Porada emphasized the need for a custom-built replacement to match the building’s historical character. Chair Gail Weiss moved to transfer $11,000 from the Reserve Fund to account 01-601-5540-0000 for the library repair and maintenance. The roll-call vote was unanimous.
The committee recorded a $55,000 Reserve Fund balance earlier in the meeting; Storm said the project is a good candidate for Community Preservation Commission funding but a CPC award this year would delay replacement until summer 2027 and the current door would likely fail before then.
