The Northfield Finance Committee voted unanimously on Feb. 2 to transfer $11,000 from the Reserve Fund to pay for a custom replacement of a large, historic rear basement door at Dickinson Memorial Library.
Library Director Misha Storm said the 42-by-84-inch wooden door dates to 1897, is rapidly deteriorating, and serves the food pantry entrance; she told the committee the door’s condition has created safety and weatherproofing problems and that a custom replacement is necessary to match the historic building. "It must be replaced," she said.
Why it matters: the door serves the library’s food pantry and the furnace sits beyond the doorway; replacing the leaky transom and the door will improve safety and energy efficiency and avoid repeated emergency repairs.
Vote and procedure
Bernhard Porada moved the transfer and Chair Gail Weiss seconded; the roll-call vote was recorded unanimously in favor (BP YEA; DC YEA; GW YEA; LM YEA; MOB YEA; RVDM YEA). The committee recorded the Reserve Fund balance at $55,000 before the transfer.
Background and alternatives
Storm said the project is a poor candidate for immediate Community Preservation Commission funding because she already applied CPC funds this year for an HVAC project and CPC scheduling would delay the repair until 2027; the committee found the repair did not need Historical Commission review and approved the transfer so the door can be replaced sooner.
Next step
The Finance Committee authorized the transfer to account 01-601-5540-0000; the replacement is expected to be custom-built and ready in a few months.
