The Mashpee School Committee scheduled a public session on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. to inform parents, students and community members about Massachusetts bullying law, the district's reporting procedures, and the school response process, and to solicit community feedback.
Committee members agreed the event should run two hours: an initial legal and policy presentation by the school attorney explaining statutory definitions, reporting mechanisms and required timelines, followed by a facilitated community discussion to gather concerns and questions from parents and students. "The goal is to clarify for parents and families what constitutes bullying and how reports are handled," a committee member said.
Staff reported outreach logistics remain unresolved: the committee needs to confirm the external facilitator or identify county resources as backups, draft a concise flyer, and arrange childcare for attendees. The superintendent's office and policy subcommittee have been asked to finalize an itinerary this week so that promotional materials can go out to families.
Committee members emphasized two objectives: educate the public about the mandated process and create a safe, facilitated space for community members to describe concerns, with the understanding the committee will use the collected input to review whether procedures are working.
No final facilitator contract was announced at the Sept. 18 meeting. The school attorney is expected to present the legal overview; committee members suggested the county human-rights liaison and MDIB leaders as possible partners or moderators if the contracted facilitator is not available.
The committee also discussed offering childcare and the possibility of recording and translating the presentation for non-English speakers. The meeting will be hosted at the high school auditorium; the committee asked staff to draft and distribute a simple flyer with the date, time, and basic itinerary.
