Green Meadow construction underway; committee warns of no "zero-cost" option if bleacher vote fails

Maynard school and district staff updated the School Committee on opening-week highlights and construction progress at Green Meadow, and discussed outreach and next steps for a special town meeting article seeking funding for bleacher replacement and related site work.
Karen Linquest said Green Meadow welcomed 462 students and more than 60 English-language learners in the building this week, and that staff have been closely involved in playground and site planning: "We've welcomed back 462 students at Green Meadow," she said, and staff have worked with landscape architects, OT/PT and the BCBA on playground design and accessibility.
District staff said construction fencing and perimeter Jersey barriers are in place, office trailers and equipment were delivered, utility test pits have been performed and controlled blasting is scheduled in the coming weeks; the district plans to include educational components so students understand what is happening.
Superintendent and committee members also reviewed the debt-exclusion special-town-meeting article to fund bleacher replacement and code/ADA upgrades. The chair warned there is no "zero-cost option": without voter-approved funding, the district may be left with noncompliant bleachers that cannot simply be rented indefinitely and could need removal. "There is no zero cost option; without this there will be no option to do [the bleachers]," the chair said, urging clearer explanation in the warrant about what a "no" vote would mean for the school and field use.
Committee members discussed outreach strategies including printed materials at games, in-person office hours and having student voices available to share perspectives while taking care to respect rules about staff or student advocacy in election-related contexts. The committee also noted a $76,000 budget revision that will be processed and considered for appropriate cost-center allocation.
The committee asked staff to refine the warrant language to spell out alternatives and the consequences of a no vote, assemble peer and code-based data for the community, and coordinate presenters for the special town meeting to answer questions about field use and infrastructure.
