Maynard committee gets update on bleacher project; options, funding and communications still unresolved

Committee members received an update on the bleacher project and discussed several next steps without taking formal action. Staff reported that the committee will keep the item on future agendas while the district and town refine options, including scenarios that could include demolition, repurposing or different funding strategies.

Members discussed possible funding sources: the town budget subcommittee will check original lines allocated for rental/free-cash that might be repurposed for demolition and Greg was asked to follow up with Justin on estimates. The committee noted that decisions about larger capital funding will involve the quad board and possibly FinCom and emphasized that any long-term operational costs should be considered before committing.

Members also stressed the importance of communicating clearly with the public about how other major town projects—particularly water and sewer infrastructure—are being funded. Committee members reported they learned the water and sewer work is being financed from enterprise funds/anticipated rate increases and that a recent $500,000 state grant for sewer was announced; they said that context should be explained to reduce public confusion about priorities.

Staff said more detailed options and cost estimates will be shared at a future meeting and that the committee will vote on a preferred path after review. Students and community members remain concerned about graduation impacts and accessibility should the district remove certain facilities; staff said they will continue to consult student leaders and the community before making final decisions.
