At the June 23 meeting staff gave a consolidated operations update that touched on recent port milestones, safety oversight and several development projects.
Chris, a Port of Virginia representative, told commissioners the long‑running deepening and widening project has reached completion, restoring a 55‑foot channel depth and expanded width on the east coast approach — a milestone celebrated at a ribbon‑cutting attended by the governor and other dignitaries. Chris said the port expects seasonal volume increases in July and August tied to inbound holiday‑season cargo.
Chris also reported that Virginia State Police completed a safety blitz at Virginia International Gateway (VIG) and North International Terminals (NIT). He said the blitz returned largely positive results and that the port’s chassis pool (reported at roughly 16,000 units) performed well; he suggested inviting Sergeant Scarboro from the State Police to brief the commission on the blitz at a future meeting.
On development projects, Charlie updated the commission on the Dong agricultural transloading facility under construction on the CSX‑adjacent site near PMT and said staff are coordinating monthly with the company and MARAD on grant conditions. Charlie reported annual throughput projections of about 8,300 20‑foot containers, 8,000 40‑foot containers and 7,500 40‑foot high‑cube containers.
Staff provided brief updates on two other items: the Croftton Industries Port Development Infrastructure Program grant application remains pending with MARAD, and staff and Director Donahghue will meet with the city manager to finalize a working agreement with American Cruise Lines before requesting authority to expend funds for waterfront improvements related to cruise calls.
No substantive policy votes were taken on these project updates; staff will return with further details as agreements and grant notifications progress.
