City manager: Ferndale Beach closures tied to high E. coli; city working with county and engineers

City Manager Martin told the council on Aug. 13 that Ferndale Beach has been closed ‘‘as often as it has been’’ this season because of high E. coli levels and that he is working with the county and the city’s engineers to look for ways to address the problem.
"We are frustrated with the Ferndale Beach being closed as often as it has been due to the high Ecoli levels. Martin is working with the County and our Engineers to see if we can come up with something to help that," Martin said. The council did not take action that night but received the update as part of routine manager comments.
Martin also reported staffing developments: the Deputy Clerk recently left, staff members Robin and Dennise have taken on additional duties, and he expects a new Clerk to return a signed conditions of employment letter imminently and begin training. He added there is "no new information for the Planned Unit Development on Orchard Lake Road." Martin further stated there have been no marijuana petitions this year and attributed that, in his view, to the city’s attorneys winning a related lawsuit in both circuit court and the court of appeals.
The council did not vote on any beach-specific remedies at the meeting; Martin said the city is in early-stage coordination with county and engineering partners to evaluate options.
