Sylvan Lake City Council voted Feb. 11 to approve a one-year extension of outdoor events and temporary uses at the Oakland County Boat Club (OCBC), including 13 Wine Down Wednesday nights and seven outdoor events, among them the Independence Day fireworks. Councilmember Buchanan moved the motion, which was seconded and carried.
The extension also renews temporary tent and food-truck use and the club’s patio/outdoor seating allowance for another year, subject to review by the council after October 2026, according to the motion presented to the council. The motion states the extension is based on the council’s review of last summer’s events and a determination that they were not incompatible with surrounding uses.
Mayor Cowper and Councilmembers voted in favor; the motion was recorded as carried. The motion did not list detailed vote tallies in the meeting text beyond the motion carried notation.
City Manager Martin had earlier said he is frustrated with residents attempting to circumvent the boat-dock policy; that concern will be addressed at a future study session along with community center policy and leaf collection, he said.
The council did not attach new permit conditions in the motion; it limited the approval to one year and required a formal review after October 2026.
Next steps: the OCBC events and temporary uses are authorized for the 2026 summer season under the one-year extension; the council will revisit the authorization after an October 2026 review.
