Sylvan Lake to appeal EGLE denial of Lakeview seawall permit

City Manager Martin told the Sylvan Lake City Council on June 11 that the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) denied the city’s seawall permit for the Lakeview area and that the city has 60 days to file an appeal. Martin said the city is preparing that appeal and that the issue has taken significant staff, engineering and legal time.
Mayor Cowper told the council that the funding to repair the Lakeview seawall had already been approved by the council and that the current delay is due to the permit denial. No formal vote was taken at the meeting on the seawall; the city manager said an appeal process is underway.
Martin framed the issue as time-consuming for staff and consultants and asked for resident patience while legal and engineering teams work through the permitting appeal process.
