Resident asks Ventnor to review boardwalk ramp banners that block porch views

Alan Laterer, a resident of South Dorset in Ventnor, raised a complaint at the June 25 meeting about banners placed on light poles at the base of the boardwalk ramps that now face residents’ porches and, he said, obstruct views. Laterer said the boardwalk lighting and poles are an improvement but that the addition of banners located at ramp bases creates an undesirable view for nearby residents.
"The new addition is that there's a light pole that was put on the base of the ramp at every entrance to the boardwalk… What I'm not in favor of is that there was a banner put on that pole that now faces the residents of the block," Laterer said, and he asked commissioners to review the placement.
Commissioners said they had seen brackets but not all installed banners and noted that only three of the ramp-end banners had been sold for the season. Officials indicated that a contract or purchase for this season may prevent immediate removal but that the city could review placement rules for next year. They said they would inspect the banners in daylight and consult with other commissioners and staff before deciding on any change.
Laterer offered to gather signatures from his block if the commission wanted more input. No formal change to the banner program or an immediate removal was ordered at the meeting; commissioners said they would review options and report back.
