Facilities upgrades and safety checks completed ahead of Middleborough school reopenings

Director of Facilities Jim Hutchinson briefed the committee on summer facilities work designed to prepare buildings for staff and students ahead of the new school year.
Hutchinson said crews completed heavy custodial and grounds work, hosted summer programs and handled numerous rentals; at Nichols Middle School staff replaced "1625 heads in total" after a recall of sprinkler heads, removed remaining classroom carpets and repaired rooftop units serving the auditorium, cafeteria and music wing.
He also described upgrades to cafeteria furniture (new round tables intended to reduce noise), interior security camera improvements, ongoing Wi‑Fi antenna work and an on‑schedule set of fire‑department inspections. On water safety he said the district changed filters on bottle‑filling stations to the cartridge the meeting referenced that removes the contaminant discussed, and added inline cartridges to kitchen kettles to address concerns about boiling water.
Hutchinson noted the district schedules air‑quality testing twice a year (more if needed) and said final punch lists from the inspections will be completed before school opens. The update did not result in any formal committee action.
