Three Oaks parks board accepts donated 'Mustang' sculpture, approves repairs and holiday plans

The Village of Three Oaks Parks and Recreation Board on Oct. 7 accepted a donated lighted "Mustang" horse sculpture and approved several park repairs and seasonal lighting plans affecting Chamberlain Path, Dewey Cannon Park and Carver Park.
Parks and Recreation Chair Ira Johnson opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. and informed the board that Alan Turner had offered a lighted Mustang sculpture for the village. Joan Brown moved to accept the donation; Marlene Kramer supported the motion and the board approved it. Brown noted the "Mustang" is the symbol for River Valley Schools.
The board received a progress update on a rain garden planned for Chamberlain Path. Johnson said DWS staff had removed the asphalt and that soil delivery was scheduled for Oct. 28, with planting hoped for by mid-November. Johnson also reported he met with sculptor Steve LaGattuta about repairs to LaGattuta's work "The Seeker." The board approved a request that the Village Manager coordinate moving the sculpture to LaGattuta's studio for the necessary repairs; the motion was made by Larry Shawver, supported by Johnson, and passed.
At Dewey Cannon Park members thanked staff and volunteers for completing repair and painting of the gazebo and discussed plans for holiday lighting. The board recommended using "soft white" lighting; Johnson said he would coordinate purchase and installation with the Village Manager and the DDA. Joan Brown moved, with support from Larry Shawver, to move two planters to the porta-john surround; the board approved the motion and the board agreed the planters will be planted in spring.
The board also agreed which trees at Carver Park will serve as the village Christmas trees: a small tree front-left of the pavilion and a larger tree right of the pavilion will be lighted, again using soft white lights. Board members noted village staff and volunteers, with a forklift, will be needed for installation.
The Planning Commission had asked the Parks and Recreation Board to propose a member to a committee addressing "Community Hospitality" related to the Master Plan. The board agreed that Larry Shawver and Brain Overley would serve as co-members to ensure one or the other could attend such meetings.
With no public comments and no additional board remarks, Joan Brown moved to adjourn at 8:49 p.m.; Marlene Kramer supported the motion and the meeting adjourned.
