Council approves Surf Internet permit to bury fiber; company to install at no cost to village

Council approved a bi-lateral permit for Surf Internet to install buried fiber-optic cabling in the village right-of-way during its Aug. 14 meeting.
Jim Morris, the Surf Internet representative, told council the installation would be done by lateral boring with no cost to the Village and that customer pricing would be locked in for life. Council approved the permit on a unanimous vote following a motion by Council member Jones and support from Council member Thomas.
The permit authorizes work in the right-of-way; council did not attach special conditions in the motion as recorded. The Public Service Committee had received the presentation and staff will oversee coordination with utilities and any required inspections or restorations of disturbed areas.
The decision allows Surf to proceed with permitting and scheduling work in coordination with village staff and applicable contractors.
