District outlines address‑verification review at six crowded elementary schools

Brunswick County Schools staff described a spring address‑verification process the district ran for six elementary schools with high enrollment. The effort focused on students in grades one through four who had been enrolled more than a year and excluded students who had recently enrolled, McKinney‑Vento students and approved employee transfers.
"We ran enrollment lists and... within that review process, we found two that were not in district," said Molly White, summarizing a multi‑step outreach campaign (letters, calls and mailed follow‑ups). White said schools continue to work through unverified families and that at open house in August any student without verification will report to the school office for in‑person verification to protect safety and accurate enrollment counts.
White provided counts by school and said mobility during the review window accounted for some withdrawals; she described safety and reunification concerns as a primary reason for the exercise and said staff will continue phone and mail outreach through the summer. The presentation included process steps, an explanation of how the district handles transfers between schools in Brunswick County, and the plan to re‑run and expand verification later if needed.
No formal board action was requested during the committee presentation; staff said they will continue verification work and report back if additional policy steps are needed.
