Brooklyn schools report failed Middle School generator; replacement estimated at $200,000–$250,000

Superintendent Rebecca Raynor reported Jan. 28 that the district’s 21‑year‑old generator at Brooklyn Middle School is no longer operational and a rental generator is keeping the building and town shelter operational while the district seeks replacement options.
Raynor said vendors, and the companies consulted by Mr. Barrette, recommended replacement rather than continued repairs and estimated the cost of a new generator at between $200,000 and $250,000. She said Mr. Barrette is obtaining additional quotes and that she will coordinate next steps with First Selectman Joe Bellavance.
Raynor also updated the board on other facility issues, noting the elementary school dishwasher is approximately 30 years old and not functioning properly. The Board’s Building Committee has met and is working with architects Russell and Dawson to develop specifications for bidding the HVAC project; Raynor said funding request timing was discussed for late spring and, if state approvals and applications succeed, construction could start as early as summer 2027.
The board did not vote on capital replacement at the meeting; Mrs. Raynor and the Building Committee will return with additional quotes, specifications and a timeline for public and town review.
