Eastford board hears facilities, staffing and student-activity updates; students ask for longer lunch/recess

Superintendent Dr. Donna Leake updated the Eastford Board of Education at its Sept. 12 meeting on facilities work, staffing efforts and contracted services. She thanked P. Willis Construction for accommodating the school schedule while completing a parking-lot paving project, reported that an asbestos assessment has been completed and that the district has estimates for replacing a dehumidifier, and noted that the 2023–24 audit will begin in October.
Dr. Leake told the board the district is working with French River and other superintendents on related-services needs and on recruiting a more diversified staff. The minutes also note an existing contract with Scotland Board of Education for a music teacher and contracts with French River for speech and language services.
Principal Carole McCombe presented the principal’s report, which covered field-trip planning, the readiness program and student progress data, the school climate survey and progress toward goals, professional development and fall sports. Board members discussed whether Grade 5 students should be allowed to play on basketball teams; the minutes record the discussion but show no motion or change in policy.
The board received correspondence from a group of 30 middle school students requesting longer lunch and recess times; the letter was entered into the record and no action was taken at the meeting.
The Director of Pupil Services, Charles Kernan, provided the September report showing changes from August; the board received the report.
The board did not take further action on athletic eligibility or the student letter at this session; any follow-up would be administrative or placed on a future agenda.
