Superintendent updates trustees on staffing, companion animal building and campus improvements

He told trustees that applicant pools varied by position but that interest appeared healthy for many vacancies.
On capital projects, the companion animal building is close to completion: retaining walls are nearly finished, interior trim work is underway and epoxy flooring is scheduled for late August. Staff said the project remains on track for a fall opening once final deliveries arrive. Separately, a sidewalk project around Building B (near the gym) has begun and is funded by city capital improvement dollars; granite curbing has been delivered.
Dr. Hooker also summarized takeaways from recent conferences (MAA and AASA), noting sessions on revitalizing CTE programs, apprenticeship partnerships, equity and crisis communications and praising two teachers from the school who presented at the MAA conference. As an illustrative keynote, he shared excerpts of Dr. Man Scott's presentation and described the keynote's "be salty" metaphor for encouraging student engagement.
The superintendent outlined the schedule for the coming weeks — staff orientation on Aug. 21, staff return Aug. 22, new student orientation Aug. 23 and the first day of school Aug. 30 — and said the administration would continue weekly construction and planning meetings through the start of school.
