The Newport Board of Commissioners on June 23 authorized the city manager to issue a purchase order for a custom Pierce pumper on a Ford chassis for the Fire/EMS Department (Commissioners Order No. 39).
Fire Chief Frank Peluso told the commission that the city received two bids and that Pierce Manufacturing submitted the winning bid for a custom pumper similar to one already in service at South Newport. Chief Peluso said the new pumper will be a full structural firefighting apparatus "no different than the fire engine we have down here," adding, "It will work everywhere. This is not a mini pumper, which are not designed for structural firefighting in residential areas."
Commissioners and the chief clarified delivery and acceptance terms: the vehicle is a fixed price, the city owes nothing until delivery and acceptance, and part of acceptance requires that the vehicle fit the Main Street firehouse under its own power (no equipment or weight to aid fit). Chief Peluso estimated delivery in about 28 to 31 months and said the manufacturer has previously produced a custom pumper for the city.
The board moved, seconded and approved the purchase order by unanimous roll call. The transcript records no public opposition during the discussion.
The action authorizes the city manager to issue the purchase order; final acceptance will depend on the delivered vehicle meeting specifications and fitting the designated bay.
