School Committee continues review of AI policy, aims to finalize language for handbook use

The Harvard School Committee devoted a substantial portion of its July 7 meeting to continued review of a draft artificial-intelligence policy developed by the policy subcommittee. Ms. Amy Morton said this was the seventh meeting on the policy and outlined the subcommittee's work. Dr. Katharine Covino and Ms. Liz Joyce both emphasized that administrators need a settled policy in order to draft the student handbook, and asked members to review proposed edits before the committee's next meeting.
Committee members discussed definitional questions and marginal edits from subcommittee work and outside advisory input, and agreed the policy should be concise and timed for implementation at the start of the school year. The committee did not take a final vote on the policy at the July 7 meeting; members indicated they intend to review Ms. Joyce's suggested language and return with recommended edits at the next meeting.
