Brookline orders new ambulance; committee studying staffing and billing models

Ambulance/Fire Chief Jeffrey Stewart reported to the Selectboard on Aug. 5 that call volume is "as expected" for the quarter and praised recent collaborative emergency responses by Brookline Fire and Police. He said the town has ordered a new ambulance; an onsite inspection is planned for October and delivery is scheduled for January 2025.
Stewart also updated the board on the Ambulance Billing Evaluation Committee, which has met three times and is reviewing data from town operations and peer communities. The committee will analyze three staffing models — the town's current mixed model, a full-time day staff model with call coverage overnight, and a 24/7 fully staffed compensated department — and present a final report in October.
Stewart said the Town of Mason is reviewing Brookline's ambulance contract history and will move forward with a contract for 2025. The board voted to post a public hearing at a future meeting to consider changes to the Fire Department fee schedule.
