City manager cites E. coli testing for beach closures, outlines site‑plan reviews and paving schedule

City Manager Martin told Sylvan Lake City Council on Sept. 10 that beach closures this summer were driven by daily E. coli testing and a 30‑day averaging method used by Oakland County.
Martin said the city tests daily for E. coli and closes the beach on days when levels exceed the maximum allowable limit; Oakland County also calculates a 30‑day average, and the city exceeded that average once in August, which extended the closure. He said if elevated results recur next year the city will publish the levels via Newsbyte so residents can make their own judgment based on the data.
Martin also reported several operational and development updates: multiple residents risk losing dock spaces for non‑compliance with city rules; the final summer concert of the season is scheduled for Sept. 12 at the Community Center; the city is finalizing three site‑plan reviews — a Wendy’s to be converted into a deli and bakery, a Tim Horton’s to be built out as a restaurant, and a Comerica Bank request to remove asphalt and replace it with landscaping. He said the vacant Orchard Lake Road property will be on the October Planning Commission agenda. Finally, Martin said the first phase of paving will commence next month.
Councilmember Zubrzycki requested a future study session focused on preventing next year’s beach closures. No public comments on these items were recorded during the meeting.
