Administrators at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School used Tuesday's board meeting to review recent and planned capital and program projects, including completed animal‑science work, ongoing barn and roof repairs, and a horticulture building phased approach tied to grant funding.
Facilities staff reported that siding work on the MS barn begun last summer remains unfinished and a contractor will complete it; staff also said roof sections on an academic building suffered storm damage in recent years and an engineering assessment is scheduled to determine needed repairs and a summer bid. "Most of the materials [for the siding] are on site… there shouldn't be a lot — most everything's sitting there right now ready to go," the facilities staff member said.
The principal reviewed the animal‑science complex: a former GCC building repurposed for animal science, a recently completed cap animal building, dairy‑barn renovations to house pigs, and active greenhouse and hoop‑house operations. He said the horticulture project was planned in two phases because limited funds prevented inclusion of a head house/greenhouse and an additional classroom in the initial build; phase two would add those elements and allow removal of legacy structures. The administration noted a $1.2 million grant agreement and said the board should consider whether a conservation restriction or other strategies could free funds for phase two.
School leaders linked facility expansion to enrollment strategy, telling trustees that reaching a fuller capacity (they modeled a 720‑student scenario) would require additional academic space or closure of 2–3 vocational shops if new space isn’t provided. They also raised staffing constraints for program restorations such as aquaculture.
