Smith board approves FFA trips, grant reimbursement, wellness policy changes and surplus declarations

The Northampton‑Smith Vocational Agricultural High School Board of Trustees approved a package of routine motions on Dec. 17 covering student trips, a grant reimbursement, policy amendments and asset disposition.
The board voted to approve an overnight trip to the FFA winter conference on Jan. 10–11, 2025, and an overnight trip to the FFA State Convention in Framingham (April 2–4, 2025). A motion to approve a $2,912 reimbursable grant from the Mass Cultural Council for the biking room was also adopted.
Trustees moved to amend the district wellness policy; the administration explained the changes relate to school nutrition language and eliminating paragraphs that could stigmatize students, aligning policy with state guidance and removing barriers associated with free and reduced‑price meal identification. "Instead of eliminating social stigma attached to free lunch ... some changes are consistent with policy," an administrator explained during discussion.
The board approved declaring outdated textbooks and other equipment surplus for resale (items included electrical textbooks and selected physical education materials). All motions were moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote with no recorded roll‑call tallies in the public transcript.
On labor relations, trustees authorized opening negotiations with the teachers’ union (NTA) and named two trustees to represent the board at the negotiating table; they also indicated a plan to hold an executive session in January for formal contract discussions.
Next steps: administration will process grant reimbursements and logistics for the approved trips; the board will enter executive session in January to continue negotiations.
