Eastford Board adopts new climate and restorative-practices policies and updates student-discipline rules

The Eastford Board of Education voted unanimously on May 8 to adopt a set of new policies updating the district’s approach to climate and restorative practices and to revise several existing student- and personnel-related policies.
Lauren Barlow, board member, proposed grouping several adoption items into a single motion; the board approved the CABE Climate Policy, the Shipman & Goodwin Climate Plan Regulations and the Shipman & Goodwin Restorative Practices Policy on a single unanimous vote (mover: Lauren Barlow; second: Robert Ellsworth). The board also approved grouped revisions to Policy 5116 (Student Discipline); Policy 5152 and 4126/4226 (prohibitions on sex discrimination for students and personnel); Policy 1610 (Pesticide Application on School Property); Policy 1250 (Visitors and Observations in Schools); and Policy 1700 (School Safety and Security).
The policy package included both adoptions and repeals. By unanimous motion the board repealed Policies 3524 (Hazardous Materials in Schools); 3524.2 (Green Cleaning); 4112 (Increasing Educator Diversity Plan); 6159 (Individualized Education Program/Special Education Program); 6159.1 (Legal and Fiscal Responsibility for Children Placed in Certain Hospitals without LEA Prior Approval) and 6160 (Release Time). Several other items were received for first reading, including Social Media (4118.51/4228.51), Section 504 (4127/4227 and 5140), Homework (6158) and a new Green Cleaning Programs policy (1620).
Board members said the grouped-motion approach was intended to move routine governance items efficiently while allowing time for targeted review by the Policy Committee, which had submitted minutes from its April 29 meeting. The motions were recorded as unanimous; the board had six members present and one member absent.
The board also adopted revisions to Policy 5144 (Administration of Student Medications) and Policy 5125 (Confidentiality and Access to Education Records) by grouped motion (mover: Barlow; second: Terry Cote).
The newly adopted and revised policies will be incorporated into district governance documents and become the framework for operational guidance; several policies will continue through the first-reading process before final adoption. The board adjourned at 6:42 PM.
