Board of Assessment Appeals sets 2027 appeal dates and upholds two appeals

The Canaan Board of Assessment Appeals met March 20, 2026, approved the minutes of its prior meeting and set hearing dates for appeals from the 2026 grand list. Co-Chair Hazel McGuire moved the schedule, naming real-estate appeal dates on Feb. 26 and March 5, 2027, and a motor-vehicle appeals date on Sept. 10, 2027, all at 10:00 a.m. in Town Hall; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously.
The board issued two substantive rulings. Co-Chair Hazel McGuire moved a "no change" decision on the Colter Rule motor vehicle appeal, citing a new 2024 State of Connecticut statute as the basis for the ruling; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. Member Tami Reid moved "no change" on the appeal of Michael Spadaccini after the board reviewed four comparable properties; that motion was also seconded and carried unanimously.
Earlier in the session, Member Tami Reid moved to approve the minutes of the last meeting; that motion passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 10:43 a.m. following a motion to adjourn by Tami Reid. Assessor Kayla Johnson was assigned to notify applicants of the board's decisions.
