Utica Community Schools board ratifies three-year contract with Utica Education Association

The Utica Community Schools Board of Education unanimously approved a three-year contract with the Utica Education Association on Oct. 8, 2025, following a motion by Kelli Rankin and support from Board Member Austerman.
William Holbrook, the district's assistant superintendent for business and employee services, told the board a tentative agreement had been reached between the district's negotiating team and the UEA, which is represented by the Michigan Education Association. The agreement covers three school years, effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2028, and was ratified by union members prior to the board's vote.
Superintendent Robert Monroe thanked the bargaining teams from both sides for their work in reaching the agreement. Brian Cecil, UEA president, addressed the board and "thanked and acknowledged the Board of Education for their continued support over the course of the negotiations and the school year," according to the board minutes.
The motion to approve the agreement passed on a roll call with all seven members voting in favor: Becker, Austerman, Meyer, Fitzpatrick, Nesovski, Rankin and Smolenski. The tentative agreement requires the board's approval to take effect; the board's vote completes that procedural step. The district did not provide financial details of the agreement in the meeting minutes.
The contract takes effect July 1, 2025; implementation details and any updates for staff will be handled by district administration as the agreement is put into place.
