The Pipestone City Council on June 22 adopted Ordinance 174 (fourth series), granting a franchise to Midcontinent Communications to construct, operate and maintain a cable television/fiber system in the city and establishing conditions, regulation and liquidated damages for violations.
Council members said the franchise provides an additional fiber option for residents. During discussion one council member called it "a great thing, another option." The ordinance had been introduced at the previous meeting and was ready for final consideration; the council conducted a roll-call vote with five yes and zero opposed.
The council also approved a separate resolution to permit summary publication of the franchise agreement (Resolution 2026-32) to reduce publication costs where legal.
Next step: Ordinance 174 is adopted and the franchise will be implemented under the terms set out in the ordinance and subsequent administrative steps.
