Resident petition pushes Ellenville trustees to move bridge project forward; board signs supplemental funding agreement

A resident brought a petition with more than 80 signatures asking the Village Board of Trustees to repair or replace the Clinton Avenue bridge, calling it a one-lane hazard for school buses, tractor-trailers and pedestrians. Carson told the trustees the bridge’s potholes and narrow pedestrian space were creating daily safety risks.
Village staff said the board approved the final easements earlier in the month and had filed them, and that the project can proceed to its next phase once those filings and contractor scheduling are complete. Village attorney Ian told the board that filing the easements and executing the supplemental agreement with the New York State Department of Transportation and federal funding programs will allow the village to include additional eligible costs and keep the project on track.
Carson also raised concerns about adjacent properties at 11 and 18 Clinton Avenue, saying one house at 18 Clinton is unlivable and that large-scale excavation, trailers and buses had been placed on floodplain land with no apparent stormwater controls. Building department staff said the building inspector had been notified, that fines were issued in response to tree removal and creek impacts, and that follow-up enforcement actions are underway.
Trustees approved a motion to accept updated federal and state aid terms and to authorize the mayor or village manager to sign a bridge supplemental agreement with NYSDOT, a procedural step the manager said was required to secure additional funding and proceed with the replacement. Trustee roll call votes were recorded where required and motions passed.
The board asked the mayor to deliver a fuller project update at the next meeting once additional documentation and timelines are available. The village manager and staff said final construction timing remains dependent on contract scheduling and the completion of easement filings.
