A committee member said they had received emails from "Miss Stevenson," identified in the meeting as chair of the town DEI committee, who raised concerns about overlap between the petition content and the committee’s work. The committee agreed to invite Miss Stevenson to the September agenda to explain the DEI committee’s role.
Committee members described the DEI group’s potential role as providing an "outside perspective" and a lens for reviewing school policies and initiatives; they discussed ways the district might partner with the town committee so that efforts are not duplicative. One member noted community pushback around external programs, referencing citizens who raised concerns about the use of materials from the Anti‑Defamation League and the "No Place for Hate" program and said that feedback led to a name change in a district initiative.
The committee emphasized that the petition is currently a placeholder at town meeting and can be withdrawn if the members judge there is too much overlap before October. Several members said collaboration — rather than duplication — would be preferable and asked staff to follow up with the petition sponsors and Miss Stevenson ahead of the next meeting.
