Committee OKs internal budget transfer; interim superintendent outlines transition and staffing updates

The Mashpee School Committee on July 24 approved a requested reallocation of general‑fund dollars to cover overspent budget lines, and heard a transition update from the interim superintendent and a construction progress report.
Director Lopes requested the budget transfer, saying it would reallocate unspent line items to overspent ones rather than increase overall spending. "This is just reallocating funds from unspent lines into overspent lines," Lopes said. The motion to transfer funds was moved, seconded and approved unanimously.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Thompson reviewed transition work since beginning on July 2: meetings with principals, central office staff, town officials and tribal leaders; review of the strategic plan and union contracts; and plans for teacher‑induction and district retreats. Dr. Thompson said the district will maintain an "Open Door Policy" and encouraged staff to request one‑on‑one meetings in August.
The committee also received a construction update: first‑floor walls have been removed and the district expects a substantial phase around Aug. 16. The administration has selected an owner’s project manager and a design team (identified in the packet), and recently completed a site walk‑through.
Committee members requested the full results of the committee’s recent evaluation to help set retreat goals and asked that staff continue to share timeline updates for construction and confirmed budget impacts.
