Student urges separation of CP and honors classes at Marlborough High

Jade Anyongo, a sophomore SACE representative, told the school committee that Marlborough High currently combines CP and honors students into the same class periods and that practice disadvantages both groups.
"At Marlborough High CP and honors students are currently combined into one setting. The only difference between the two is homework and slightly different tests," Jade said, arguing that combined classes "force teachers to teach in a way that tries to meet in the middle, which ultimately leaves both groups unfulfilled." She added that the jump from a combined class into a full honors schedule can be too large for some students.
Committee members asked staff to provide data. Miss Hennessy asked for a count of how many current sections are combined so the committee can understand the number of students affected. Superintendent Defalco replied that the figure exists and staff will provide it at a later date.
The student presentation connected to broader committee discussion about curriculum, student placement and recruitment for the district's "Choose MHS" campaign. No formal policy or staffing change was approved during the meeting; the committee requested additional details from district staff to quantify the issue.
