School committee approves personnel changes, music vendor contract, animals-in-schools policy and accepts donations

Personnel and staffing: The committee approved replacing the grants manager/accounts-payable supervisor job description with a new assistant director of finance and operations position (not an additional FTE but with expanded supervisory responsibilities) and approved converting a confidential human-resources support role into an assistant director of human resources; members discussed salary-range comparisons and confirmed that the changes are intended to improve continuity and processing capacity in the business and HR offices.
Summer meals and outreach: Director of Finance and Operations Matt Wells reminded the committee the district's summer feeding program runs June 23–Aug. 22, Monday–Friday, 12–2 p.m., with meals available at the public library and open to children through age 18 and select 18–22 populations; Wells said the program is publicized through principal notifications and community partners.
Music vendor procurement: The committee authorized the chief procurement officer to award an RFP for the student instrument rental and repair program to David French Music Company of Westboro for a contract period through June 30, 2028, with a two-year renewal option through June 30, 2030 (subject to appropriation). The district's preferred-vendor arrangement is intended to provide affordable monthly rentals, repair services and scholarship instrument support; committee members asked about scholarship awareness and how to expand instrument access at the elementary level.
Policy and donations: Members voted to suspend the rules and approve an updated Animals-in-Schools policy (IM) that clarifies treatment of service, support and non-service animals with attention to liability and insurance considerations. The committee accepted multiple donations and grants listed in the packet, including a $500 contribution to a high-school all-nighter from the Middlesex District Attorney's Office (the transcript records two recusals and four approvals on that item), donations from local organizations and a Title III Part A award of $23,471 for immigrant children and youth.
