Council accepts three state grants for building IT, police body cameras and energy upgrades

Councilor Irish moved and the council approved a $97,500 grant from the Commonwealth’s Community Compact Cabinet Information Technology Grant Program for the Building Department to digitize records. The motion carried 10-0.
The council then approved a $200,500 grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security Body Worn Camera Grant Program to the Police Department to create, purchase and implement a body-worn camera program. The vote was 10-0.
Finally, the council approved a $250,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources Green Communities Division to update cooling and heating systems at Fire Station 1 and the Police Department, aimed at reducing energy costs. Councilor Oram commented that the grant was a positive step toward energy efficiency amid rising energy costs. The vote on the energy grant was 10-0.
All three grants were approved by the council without further amendment and will proceed to implementation steps managed by the relevant city departments.
