Student panel: Killingly reports lowest chronic absenteeism in four years at 16%

A student panel from Killingly Intermediate School and Killingly High School presented district climate-survey results at the April 9, 2025 Killingly Board of Education meeting, reporting improvements in student connectedness, respect among students and overall safety.
Presenters said KIS data showed more students report feeling connected to at least one adult and that awareness and reporting around bullying have increased; KIS has increased adult hallway monitoring and a security officer presence, and students receive rewards through a “Prize Patrol” program. KHS presenters said there is more time for student–teacher interaction and more availability during the day for students, and that the number of students reporting they feel safe physically and emotionally has increased.
The presentation included a district-level chronic-absenteeism figure: “In March 2025 chronic absenteesim data was the lowest it has been in 4 years with a 16% district-wide,” according to the meeting record. Board members and administrators did not record additional contested analysis in the minutes; the students credited closer monitoring, more engaging lessons and stronger adult–student connections.
The student engagement steering committee was formed out of the district-wide attendance committee and meets approximately six times a year, the presentation noted.
