Superintendent Joe Kobza and board members said a structural engineer has been hired to assess Chalk Hill’s viability; they expect to receive a report by the end of the week and will present findings to the facilities ad hoc committee at its next meeting. The committee will review building conditions, prioritize items for a longer-range (10-year) capital plan and then make recommendations to the full board for potential capital requests to the town.
Board members debated timing and strategy. Some members argued that preliminary work on grant applications can and should begin now so the district does not miss state funding deadlines (notably a June 30 cutoff referenced repeatedly), while others said more concrete engineering data are needed before committing to specific designs. The board agreed to invite the shared grant writer and consultant Michelle Petraelli to committee meetings to begin scoping possible grant applications.
Members also raised immediate operational concerns: an apparently high irrigation water invoice for Chalk Hill prompted facilities staff to investigate a potential leak, and the board discussed short-term capacity options such as portable classrooms (a resident estimated earlier that portable classrooms could cost about $1 million). Several board members emphasized better, clearer communications to parents and the public once data from the facilities committee are available to limit rumors.
Next steps: the facilities ad hoc committee will meet Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. to review the engineer’s findings (when available), refine the capital-prioritization list and consider whether to begin grant applications in advance of final plans.
