District reports DESI Group A integrated monitoring review; staff to supply additional documents

Lynn Snow, director of student services, briefed the Littleton School Committee on the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE/‘DESI’) Group A integrated monitoring review (IMR) the district underwent this year.
Snow said Group A emphasizes special-education processes including timely child‑find responses, structured MTSS/SST documentation and data-driven progress monitoring. “DESI is making it very clear that MTSS and child-find responsibilities are deeply interconnected,” she said in the presentation overview.
The district provided large volumes of documentation and hosted an on-site review in April. Snow said the district received preliminary feedback and a “pre‑finding correction,” meaning reviewers requested additional documentation and clarification; the district has a June 1 due date to upload requested materials. If the reviewer remains concerned, findings could prompt a corrective action plan and subsequent progress reporting.
Snow walked members through several report focus areas: timelines for responding to parental requests for special-education evaluation (including the 5‑day initial response and 30/45‑day assessment/IEP timelines), Part C-to-B transitions at age three, transition planning starting by age 14, and civil-rights criteria such as equitable counseling and early-literacy screening.
Committee members asked whether parents and students were surveyed as part of the review; Snow said DESE sent a survey directly to families and that the review included interviews with teachers, parents and CPAC representatives.
Snow said the district benefits from the external review by tightening documentation and ensuring a consistent SST protocol across schools. “If that satisfies this pre‑finding correction, then we'll have no release,” she told the committee, describing the current status as responsive and ongoing.
Next steps: district principals and central office staff are continuing to gather and upload the requested evidence. If the department issues formal findings, the district will develop corrective actions and report progress to DESI.
