Westbrook Library reorganizes collections, advances ADA work and summer program plans; repairs and safety item noted

Trustees heard updates on collection management and Library of Things reorganization, ongoing ADA Title II website compliance work, plans to give a participation prize to summer reading participants, light-ballast replacement after a smoky odor, and two upcoming adult programs with Tom Truxes.
The Westbrook Public Library board received a suite of operational updates from Library Director Michelle Centore covering collections, accessibility work, building maintenance, and programming.
Centore said staff have paused routine weeding and completed a reorganization of the three Library of Things collections so they share a common space to boost circulation; a staff member named Tricia will continue to manage the Toy Library using her binder-and-card system. On accessibility, the town IT department advised that alternate text is required for website compliance with ADA Title II; the library is working on alternate text and other accessibility measures.
For summer reading, Centore reported that, following suggestions from patrons and the Friends group, all participants will receive a small participation prize (proposed: a rubber duck) to match the "Hatch the Duck" theme; program details will be available in June. On building and grounds, staff replaced light ballasts on March 18 after detecting a smoky odor, and the community room kitchen renovation plan continues with measurements to be completed shortly.
Programming updates: a rescheduled "Take Your Child to Library Day" on March 14 had moderate attendance; Teen Advisory Board members discussed summer reading; adult programs such as the seed library, "Thread Together," and genealogy events are performing well. The minutes also list two upcoming talks with Tom Truxes on July 29 and August 5.
Under new business the minutes note a Connecticut Library Consortium arrangement that may allow libraries to restore access to the Hartford Courant and that town surveillance footage helped track suspicious activity in the library parking lot on Feb. 2. Centore presented an additional proposed bullet for the Library Patrons Rules of Conduct for review and a planned June vote. The meeting adjourned at 8:24 p.m.
